When You Should Visit an Emergency Dentist

If you sustain an extreme wound or other traumatic injury to your oral cavity, you should immediately visit an emergency dentist. You should never ignore dental injuries, as you will only increase the chances of permanent damage to your mouth or teeth. Remember that even if pain medication makes the injury bearable, it is not fixing the underlying problem. Also, avoiding an appointment for your dental injury will likely result in more treatments later, which will result in more expenses than simply seeking care initially.

Severe toothaches are a common reason for patients to promptly seek emergency dental care. If your toothache is accompanied by a fever or swollen gums, you probably have some type of infection. These infections are usually the result of a bacterial infection and are not effectively treated with standard household painkillers. Your pain will subside once you allow veneers before and after to drain the pus from your tooth, but you must seek care quickly so the infection does not spread.

You should also seek emergency dental treatment if you suffer from a broken, chipped, or knocked-out tooth. If your tooth is chipped or broken, try to save as large of a portion as you are able. If you discover that the area around the broken tooth is bleeding, you should keep a piece of gauze pressed to it until you are at the dentist's office. You have the best chance of stopping the bleeding if you apply pressure to the affected area. Additionally, if you hope to keep your jaw and face from swelling, you should press a cold compress to the outside of your cheek.

If, on the other hand, your tooth is completely knocked from your mouth, you should rinse it under cold water with extreme care, making sure that all gum tissue and nerves stay attached. Make certain that the tooth is not thrown away. It is vital to visit an emergency dentist immediately after your tooth is knocked-out. The more quickly you receive treatment, the more likely it is that your tooth can be reattached. If you receive treatment within one-hour of the initial injury, you have the best chance of your tooth being successfully reattached.

Although these are two of the most frequent issues for which people seek emergency dental treatment, there are a variety of other issues that may prompt you to visit before and after cosmetic dentistry. If, for example, your braces' wire breaks or you lose a crown/filling, you should probably seek treatment from an emergency dentist. Do not be embarrassed to visit an emergency dentist if you ever think your oral health is in imminent danger.
